Junior Cricket

Junior Cricket at Trojans

Trojans Cricket Club is based just north of Southampton at Stoneham Lane, Eastleigh (SO50 9HT), and our junior section is one of the largest and most active in Hampshire. Around 180 young cricketers train with us every week throughout the summer term, led by volunteer ECB qualified coaches and supported by dedicated parent helpers. It is a fantastic, welcoming community and we are incredibly proud of what we have built.

Any young person wanting to learn or improve their cricket is welcome at Trojans — whatever their age, ability or experience. We start with children in Year R to Year 2 through our ECB All Stars programme, which runs for 8 weeks in the summer term from May (bookings now open). From there, players can progress into our junior cricket provision, which runs from U9s all the way through to U17s. Age groups are based on your child's birthday as at 1 September 2025.

As players move through the programme, the game naturally evolves around them — progressing from soft ball to hard ball cricket, with longer pitches, faster bowling and increasingly tactical and precise match play as they develop. It is a carefully structured journey designed to bring the best out of every cricketer at every stage.

For players aged 15 and above, we actively encourage and support the transition into our senior teams, where six sides at different levels — including women's cricket — ensure there is always the right environment for every player to continue their development and keep enjoying the sport they love.

At Trojans we believe that cricket should be enjoyable for everyone. We encourage every player to take an active part in matches — not just fielding — and we place great importance on good sporting attitudes, respect for umpires and officials, and looking after equipment. These values are at the heart of everything we do. 🏏

All Stars Cricket at Trojans

All Stars is the perfect introduction to cricket for your youngest children and one of the most fun and energetic sessions on the Trojans calendar. Designed for children in Year R to Year 2, it is a fantastic way to develop key skills, make new friends and — most importantly — fall in love with cricket from the very start.

Each week children work through a series of exciting challenges designed to develop their batting, bowling, catching, throwing and communication skills, all in a fun and engaging environment tailored specifically to young players. Every child receives their very own personalised All Stars t-shirt to keep, making them feel like a true cricketer from day one.

One of the things that makes All Stars so special is that parents and carers are strongly encouraged to get involved alongside their child each week. So don't forget to bring your trainers — you might just enjoy it as much as they do!

Some Year 3 children also start with All Stars, though we find that most players of that age are ready to jump straight into our junior club cricket sessions — speak to us if you are unsure and we will help you find the right fit.

2026 Sessions Fridays 5:30–6:30pm | From Friday 8 May to Friday 3 July 2026 | 8 sessions Cost: £50

Please note: All Stars bookings are made directly through the ECB — they cannot be booked through Trojans. Please use the links below to register your child. Places fill up quickly so we recommend booking early! 🏏

Which Age Group Does My Child Play In?

Age group upper limits are set by your child's birthday as at 1 September 2025, and for most players this will simply follow their school year. Very occasionally a player may play up a year group, and there can be some natural overlap in training groups for players transitioning from soft ball to hard ball.

Any player wishing to train or play outside their normal school year group must speak to their lead coach or Junior Co-ordinator first. Players can also play down a year group if more appropriate for their development, though this must also be discussed with the coach as a formal request will need to be submitted to the league.

KEY DATES:

Outdoor training starts on FRIDAY 17th April 2026

NOTE: All Stars will start on 8 May.

Matches for most teams starts on Sunday 3 May and the main league goes through until the end of July but the summer social matches continue through to the end of August.

Trojans in the Serious Cricket Hampshire Junior Championships 2026

Trojans compete in the Serious Cricket Hampshire Junior Championships (SCHJC) — the county's premier junior cricket league. In 2026 we have 12 teams entered across all age groups, one of the largest junior entries in Hampshire.

The competition operates across three tiers within each age group, ensuring every player competes at the level that is right for them:

Tier 1 — competitive cricket designed to challenge and develop performance players

Tier 2 — development and social cricket, ideal for players growing their skills or new to the age group

Tier 3 — focused on building confidence and enjoyment, perfect for those newer to the game

Here is how our teams are entered for the 2026 season:

U9s —

A team in Tier 2,

B team in Tier 3

U11s —

A team in Tier 1,

B team in Tier 2

U13s —

A team in Tier 1,

B team in Tier 2

U15s —

(performance players are also encouraged to play in our senior Saturday sides or Border League on Tuesday evenings)

(players at this age should primarily be playing in our senior teams — with six sides across a range of leagues, including our women's Southern Stars team, a joint side with Calmore Sports Club, there is a level to suit everyone)

WHAT IS THERE FOR GIRLS

Girls Cricket at Trojans

At Trojans we are really proud of our girls cricket programme and there is a pathway for every girl, whatever her age, ability or ambition.

Year R to Year 2 We recommend starting out with our ECB All Stars programme — the perfect fun introduction to cricket for the youngest players. Bookings are made directly through the ECB at www.allstarscricket.co.uk.

Year 3 to Year 6 Girls in this age group have plenty of options! You are welcome to join the open U9 training sessions, or you may prefer our dedicated girls-only Softball Girls squad, which trains at the same time as the U9s on Friday evenings. The focus is the same — developing skills and enjoying cricket — but with its own brilliant vibe. Girls in this group can play in their own girls softball matches as well as supporting the U9 teams, where they make an essential and valued part of the squad.

Year 6 to Year 11 Around Year 6 — though it varies from player to player — girls are often ready to make the step up to hardball cricket. Our U15 Hardball Girls squad is a fantastic group of young cricketers from Year 6 through to Year 11, and one of the things that makes it so special is the way the older girls support and encourage the younger ones. Everyone looks out for each other and the team spirit is brilliant. Please note that we currently have a Girls U11 and Girls U15 team but no dedicated U13 girls team — girls in Years 6 to 8 get their match experience through the U11 teams until they feel ready to step up to U16 matches.

Year 11 and Above — Senior Cricket When girls are ready to take the next step into senior cricket, our Southern Stars women's team is ready to welcome them with open arms. The Southern Stars are a joint side with Calmore Sports Club and compete in the Hampshire Cricket League Women's Division. Visit their team page for more details.

Prefer Softball? — W10 For girls who do not wish to transition to hardball cricket, our W10 team is a fantastic alternative. Open to girls in Year 7 and above, W10 is played with a soft incrediball in a fun and social format — no pads, no helmet and no experience required. New players are always warmly welcomed. 🏏

Junior Cricket Equipment Guide

Having the right equipment is an important part of playing cricket safely and enjoyably. Below is a guide to what your child will need at each stage of their cricket journey. Club equipment including bats, stumps, balls and cones is provided at all training sessions, so there is no need to rush out and buy everything at once — but as players develop, having their own kit makes a real difference.

Softball Cricket (All Stars, U9s and Girls Softball)

Softball cricket requires very little personal equipment, making it a brilliant and accessible way to start playing the game:

Comfortable sports clothing — no specific kit required Trainers — any supportive sports footwear is fine Cap or sun hat — strongly recommended for all outdoor sessions Named water bottle — essential for all sessions

Hardball Cricket (U11s and above)

Once players move into hardball cricket, protective equipment becomes compulsory for certain roles. The following is required in line with ECB guidelines for junior players in affiliated clubs:

Helmet with faceguard — compulsory for all batters and wicket keepers. Must be correctly fitted with a full faceguard and bought new — never second-hand. Must meet the British Standard BS7928:2013 or higher.

Abdo guard — compulsory for all batters and wicket keepers (boys and girls). Girls should look for a female abdo guard when purchasing.

Batting pads — compulsory for all batters and wicket keepers.

Batting gloves — compulsory for all batters and wicket keepers.

Trainers or Cricket spikes — suitable footwear is essential. Spikes are recommended for older age groups on grass.

Match shirt - Trojans junior match shirt or a predominantly red T-shirt — required for match days.

Trousers - Navy tracksuit bottoms or navy shorts — required for match days.

Cap or sun hat — strongly recommended for all outdoor sessions.

Named water bottle — essential for all sessions.

Trojans holds a small loan supply of helmets, pads and gloves for players who are just starting out in hardball cricket, but we strongly recommend purchasing your own kit as soon as possible.

Serious Sport at Dummer Down Farm, Dummer, Basingstoke, RG25 2AR stock a comprehensive range of junior cricket equipment and their knowledgeable team are always happy to help you find the right kit.

⚠️ Stem Guards — Important ECB Recommendation for 2026 ⚠️

For the 2026 season the ECB strongly advises that all players under the age of 18 wear a fixed or attached neck protector — commonly known as a stem guard — on their helmet whenever they are batting or wicket keeping up to the stumps.

A stem guard attaches to the back of the helmet and protects the gap between the helmet and the back of the neck, an area that has been identified as vulnerable to serious injury from a rising delivery or a ball that deflects off the bat or stumps.

This is not yet a mandatory regulation but is a strong recommendation from the ECB and one that Trojans Cricket Club fully endorses. We strongly encourage all junior players and their parents to ensure their helmet is fitted with an appropriate stem guard before the 2026 season begins.

It is highly recommended that all neck protection meets the latest BSI safety standard BS7928:2013. When purchasing a new helmet, please check that stem guard compatibility is confirmed by the manufacturer. If you are unsure, please speak to a specialist cricket retailer such as Serious Sport who will be able to advise you. 🏏
